Turkey not to be EU member soon: Turkish expert

“Turkey cannot join the EU soon and the Turkish government, as well as the people, understands it well,” Akyol told journalists in Baku.

However, Ankara‘s talks with the European countries on joining the EU is a step aimed at identifying future policy, he added.

Negotiations on Turkey’s joining the EU have been continuing since 2005. At present the talks at an impasse because of the unwillingness of many European countries, particularly France, to accept Turkey in the EU, which has the problem of human rights, but also because of Turkey’s refusal to recognize Republic of Cyprus as the EU member and to open transport connections with it. In 2006, EU governments froze the talks on six points, since Turkey refused to open its ports and airports for cargo and passengers from the part of Cyprus controlled by Greek Cypriots. Moreover, France and Germany do not want to see Turkey as EU full member, preferring to give it the status of a special partner.
