Greek diplomats have issued formal apologies to Albania and Macedonia for anti-Albanian racist chants shouted last week at an Athens rally by coast guardsmen.
A videotape of the rally Thursday — Greece’s independence day — showed 36 members of the coast guard’s special forces chanting racist slogans about Albanians and residents of the Macedonian capital of Skopje, Macedonia’s MIA state news agency reported.
“They are Skopians, they are Albanians, we will make new clothes out of their skins,” the video shows the men chanting.
Greek Ambassador Nikolaos Pazios told Albania’s Foreign Minister Ilir Meta in Tirana those responsible would be “dealt with suitably,” the Kathimerini newspaper said Tuesday.
In the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greek Ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou also apologized.
“It should be condemned and it is being condemned, and this doesn’t represent the people of Greece,” she said.
