We want the people to voice their opinion whether a referendum on Turkey’s EU membership should be held or not. I am sure over 90% of the people in Bulgaria do not approve of Turkey’s joining the EU, VMRO Chairman Krasimir Karakachanov said.
“It is high time that they asked us. No referendums were held on Bulgaria’s NATO and EU membership, unlike other European countries. I do not want a politician to promise Turkey EU membership on my behalf, without asking the Bulgarian people,” said Karakachanov.
According VMRO Turkey does not have a place in the EU because of many reasons, one of them being the fact that Turkey is not a European country, but a Muslim country, and the EU is based on Christian principles and values.
“A country that owes Bulgaria USD 20 billion for compensation for the Eastern Thracian refugees and does not want to pay it, although it has signed an agreement, does not have a place in the EU,” he added.
He thinks Turkey’s EU entry will bring “death to the Bulgarian agriculture.”
Right now the Bulgarian market is flooded with cheap Turkish produce and the situation will worsen if the last restrictions and customs duties imposed on Turkey are lifted, he said further and highlighted:
“We believe Turkey should not be an EU member, but this does not mean hatred for Turkey or Turks.”
