In a recent remark which appeared in the media Mladenov had said, “Turkey’s EU bid is a long journey. Let’s not talk about something that will happen in 15 or 20 years.”
Mladenov says his remarks were distorted by the media.
“Bulgaria will be the last country to oppose or set forth obstacles in the process of Turkey’s accession to the EU. Because we have become a member to the EU not too long ago. We understand Turkey well. Therefore we are following and supporting this process,” says Mladenov.
He says neither Bulgaria or any other country could decide on Turkey’s accession process.
“I did not pronounce ’20 years’ in any remark. We are supporting Turkey’s EU accession process. Of course the duration of this process depends on Turkey’s performance. It must make reforms and take steps about human rights and democracy, and meet EU criteria,” said Mladenov.
