Police are asking victims of crime in Athens to seek help from the far-right Golden Dawn party, according to reports. Members also are accused of murdering Aleksandar Samardziev, an ethnic Macedonian student whose surname, allegedly, was ‘not Greek enough.’
One person, who insisted on anonynimity told the UK Guardian newspaper of an incident involving Albanian immigrants, saying that their mother called the Athens cops, “They immediately said if it’s an issue with immigrants go to Golden Dawn,” the person claimed, adding, “If the police and official mechanism can’t deliver and there is no recourse to justice, then you have to turn to other maverick solutions.”
The party had been at insignificant levels until the May election, where they won 12% of the vote and gained 18MPs. Since then the party has been building support by offering food kitchens that only serve Greeks and serve food containing pork to exclude immigrants.
The party now has around 20% support, but there are reports that up to 80% of Athens police voted for the party.
